Life Insurance Is More Affordable Than You Think

•The ApplyForLife Team

I hear it every week. "I would love to have life insurance but I can't afford it."

So I ask what they think it costs. Almost every time, the guess is higher than the real number. People are not being cheap. They are working from a bad estimate, and the estimate usually came from the wrong product.

Here is what coverage actually costs in 2026, so you can decide for yourself.

Real numbers for $500,000 of coverage

These are verified monthly premiums for a $500,000, 20-year level term policy at Preferred Plus pricing, non-smoker. Best ranked carrier at each age, pulled from the quote engine we use to quote real clients.

Age 25: $17.95/mo male, $14.79/mo female

Age 35: $20.13/mo male, $17.07/mo female

Age 45: $45.51/mo male, $35.88/mo female

Age 55: $113.76/mo male, $82.70/mo female

Read that again. A healthy 30-something can put half a million dollars of protection in place for less than a phone bill. Not a mortgage payment. Not a car payment.

Why the estimate is usually wrong

*One.* The only quote they ever saw was for permanent coverage. Whole life and guaranteed universal life include a cash value component, so the same death benefit costs several times more per month. That is a real product with real uses, but it is not what most families need first.

*Two.* They asked one agent with one company. One carrier's price is not the market's price. When I shop a case across a few dozen carriers, the gap between the best and worst quote for the same person is often more than double.

*Three.* They assumed their age or their health history knocked them out. Age raises the price, it does not disqualify you. Neither does most medication, most past medical history, or a family history you cannot control. Underwriting is more forgiving than people expect.

What actually moves the price

Five things decide your rate. Your age, your health class, tobacco use, the coverage amount, and the length of the term.

You cannot make yourself younger, which is exactly why today is the cheapest version of you that will ever exist. If you use tobacco, quitting changes everything, and some carriers have more forgiving tobacco classes than others. Want less coverage, a shorter term, or both? The price drops.

One honest note, because I get this question constantly: your city and your ZIP code do not change the price. Neither does your state, in almost every case. The rate follows you, not your address.

The better question

Instead of asking whether you can afford life insurance, ask what it would cost your family if the income stopped.

The mortgage still comes due. Childcare does not get cheaper. The car payment does not pause. Most families need enough coverage to replace a decade or more of income, and then they are surprised when the premium lands somewhere between a streaming subscription and a utility bill.

Get your own number before you decide it is out of reach. It takes a few minutes, it costs nothing, and the number is almost always better than the guess.
