International Travel & Medical Insurance

Your Health Plan Stops at the Border

Medicare will not cover you abroad, and most domestic plans will not either. International travel medical coverage does, from a routine clinic visit to a $200,000 air ambulance home.

Medical limits up to $8,000,000. Evacuation up to $1,000,000. Live pricing, direct from the carrier, no markup.

Two Jobs, Two Different Products

Travel insurance is really two kinds of coverage, and most travelers end up needing both. Travel medical pays for getting sick or hurt while you are away. Trip protection pays you back when the trip itself falls apart.

Travel Medical Insurance

Health coverage for the time you are abroad. It pays medical bills, emergency evacuation, and related services. This is what you actually need if you are leaving the country, whether you are a U.S. traveler going overseas, a visitor coming into the U.S., a student on a study abroad program, or a crew working at sea.

Trip Protection Insurance

Protection for the money you have already spent. It refunds prepaid trip costs when you cancel or interrupt for a covered reason, and it bundles in medical, baggage, and delay benefits. If you have paid real money for the trip, this is the coverage that keeps you from losing it.

Emergency Medical Care

Doctor visits, hospitalization, surgery, prescriptions, and urgent care abroad, paid up to the plan maximum instead of out of your pocket.

Emergency Evacuation

Air ambulance and transport to the nearest qualified hospital, plus repatriation. Limits reach $1,000,000, and the full policy maximum on Patriot Platinum.

Trip Cancellation

Reimbursement for prepaid, non-refundable trip costs when illness, weather, or another covered reason forces you to cancel.

Trip Interruption and Delay

Coverage up to 150% of trip cost if you have to come home early, plus reimbursement for the hotel and meal costs of long delays.

Baggage and Belongings

Reimbursement when luggage, phones, cameras, or travel documents are lost, stolen, or damaged along the way.

Visitors to the USA

How This Compares to the Airline Checkbox

Booking a flight usually offers one travel insurance product at checkout. It is the most common way people buy coverage, and it is usually the thinnest medical coverage in the market, because it is built for cancellation first and medical second. Published benefit limits, side by side:

Travel Insurance Questions

Do I need travel insurance if I already have health insurance?▼

Probably yes. Medicare does not cover care received outside the United States in almost all cases, and most domestic health plans either exclude international claims or pay only a limited emergency benefit. Travel medical coverage fills that gap for accidents, illness, and emergency evacuation while you are away.

When is the best time to buy travel insurance?▼

Within 14 to 21 days of your first trip deposit. Buying in that window activates the pre-existing condition waiver on plans that offer it and locks in Cancel For Any Reason coverage. Cancel For Any Reason generally has to be purchased before the trip starts.

Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?▼

Coverage for the acute onset of a pre-existing condition is built into most Patriot travel medical plans, and several plans offer a full pre-existing condition waiver when you buy within the required window. Acute onset means a sudden, unexpected flare-up needing immediate treatment, not routine or ongoing care.

How much medical coverage do I need abroad?▼

Enough to survive a serious event, not just a routine visit. As a reference point, a single air ambulance runs $20,000 to $200,000, and a few days in a foreign hospital can consume a $50,000 limit quickly. Most travelers should look at $250,000 and up, and higher if the destination has expensive or limited care.

I am traveling to the United States. Can I get coverage?▼

Yes. Patriot America and Patriot America Plus are designed for non-U.S. residents visiting the United States, with maximum limits from $10,000 to $1,000,000, coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions, and renewability up to 24 months.

Do I need special coverage for a Schengen visa?▼

Schengen countries require travel medical insurance with at least 30,000 euros of medical coverage, including emergency evacuation and repatriation, valid for the entire stay. Plans that meet the requirement are issued with the visa letter you need at the consulate.

Is travel insurance worth it for a cruise?▼

Cruises concentrate prepaid, non-refundable costs up front, and a medical emergency at sea is expensive because treatment and evacuation happen far from any network. Trip protection covers cancellation and interruption, and travel medical covers the onboard and ports-of-call medical side.

Can I buy travel insurance after my trip has started?▼

Travel medical coverage cannot be backdated, but many plans can start the day you call, so coverage can often begin immediately for the remainder of the trip. Trip cancellation coverage cannot be purchased once you are already traveling.

How much does travel insurance cost?▼

It depends on age, trip length, destination, and the maximum limit you choose. Travel medical plans are typically priced per day of coverage and are often a modest addition to the cost of the trip. Trip protection is priced as a percentage of your prepaid trip cost. The quote links on this page show live pricing for your actual dates and travelers.

Where do I get help if something goes wrong abroad?▼

Every plan includes 24/7 multilingual assistance staffed by nurses, doctors, and case managers who handle emergencies, evacuations, and provider referrals. You also have our office line at 214-272-2769 for claims questions and renewals.
